Candee – End of Life
Renewable Biodegradable Aliphatic Polyester Blend ReBAP
- Renewable — majority plant-based, from annually renewed plant feedstocks.
- Biodegradable — supported by ISO 17556 soil biodegradation testing.
- Aliphatic Polyester — the chemical family of the biopolymer feedstocks.
- Blend — the final formulations combine these biopolymers into one matrix.
- ReBAP — short, technical, memorable.

What is ReBAP?
ReBAP (Renewable Biodegradable Aliphatic Polyester Blend) is a material engineered to provide the functional performance of conventional plastics while enabling controlled biodegradation under natural soil conditions — preventing any risk of micro or nano plastic legacy from products made from the material.
The material is primarily derived from plant-based carbon sources and formulated for strength, durability and environmental breakdown through microbial activity.
Biodegradation Performance
A range of finished material blends, all composed of the same underlying biopolymer matrix blend, have been tested under ISO 17556 — which measures ultimate aerobic biodegradation in soil under controlled laboratory conditions — and has met the accepted threshold, meaning the material can be considered inherently biodegradable.
This demonstrates the material’s ability to undergo microbial biodegradation in soil environments.
Soil Environmental Safety
Soil ecotoxicity testing has been conducted on a range of finished blends, all composed of the same underlying biopolymer matrix blend, using OECD 208 (plant growth) and OECD 222 (earthworm reproduction).
Results met the soil ecotoxicity criteria referenced in EN 13432, EN 14995 and ISO 23517. This confirms the material does not cause harmful effects to plants or earthworms under test conditions.
Home Composting
ReBAP is not certified as home compostable.
However, because the material has demonstrated aerobic soil biodegradation under ISO 17556 testing, it is capable of biodegrading under soil microbial conditions. In a well-managed home compost system — where sufficient microbial activity, moisture and aeration are present — biodegradation will occur over time.
The rate and completeness of breakdown will depend on the efficiency and management of the individual compost system, including temperature, moisture levels, aeration and microbial diversity. Home composting outcomes cannot be guaranteed and will vary.
Recycling
ReBAP materials are compatible with specialist recycling systems where available. They are not currently accepted in most kerbside recycling collections.
Environmental Scope
Component polymers used within ReBAP have demonstrated biodegradation in additional environmental simulation testing. Further environmental testing of the final blended formulation is ongoing.
